Ignition Distributor basics: How does the Electronic Ignition Distributor work
Sep 18 , 2020

Ignition system is an important part of gasoline engine. Whether the performance of the ignition system is good or not has great influence on the power, fuel consumption and exhaust pollution of the engine. The ignition system consists of an ignition coil, ignition distributor, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plug wires.

Let us move on the topic:How does the electronic ignition distributor work.

The electronic ignition distributor plays the key role when a multi-cylinder engine ignition system with one ignition coil only. Ignition distributor is a part of gasoline engine that regularly distributes high-voltage electricity to the spark plugs of each cylinder according to the ignition sequence of the cylinder. When the rotor is rotating, the metal blades contact three terminal posts at a time. Thus, when the high voltage pulse of the ignition coil ‘s secondary resistance passes through the ignition wire, the pulse contacts a terminal through the metal blade of the rotor, then every component is timed. This terminal is connected by the ignition wire to the cylinder spark plug that happens to fire. As the engine runs, the ignition system continues to generate high pressure pulses, and at the same time, the spark plugs are allocated just in time to fire.

Function of ignition distributor :

1. Connect or disconnect the primary circuit

2. Distribute the high voltage generated by the ignition coil to the spark plugs of each cylinder according to the engine

3. Adjust the right ignition time automatically according to the engine speed and load

Structure of ignition distributor:

The ignition distributor is composed of breaker, distributor, capacitor and ignition advance adjusting device.

High Performance Ignition distributor

1.The function of a breaker is to switch on and off the primary circuit periodically to make the primary current change in order to induce the generation of secondary voltage in the ignition coil. The contact clearance of the breaker is generally 0.35 ~ 0.45mm. The contact clearance can be changed by adjusting the position of the fixed contact touch spot.

2. The distributor is to distribute the high voltage which generated in the ignition coil, to the spark plugs of each cylinder in turn according to the working process of the engine.

2. The capacitor used in the ignition systems of gasoline engines are usually paper. The capacitor is connected in parallel with the contact of the breaker, which can reduce the electric spark between the contacts and prevent the contact from burning when the primary circuit of the ignition coil is disconnected, accelerate the flux change rate of the ignition coil, and improve the ignition voltage

4. The ignition advance curve increases larger with the increasing of gasoline engine speed. The ignition advance regulator is located at the lower part of the distributor. It is composed of centrifugal ignition advance regulator and vacuum ignition advance regulator
